11:10 pm - whip smart!

i went to see liz phair tonight! in first ave. (which is in minneapolis, for those in the liz community). i have never met liz phans before, except my friend jeremy, and it was great! everyone was really nice. i met a bunch of people and then this guy asked me if i have seen her before, and i said that i have waited since 1992 to see her, and they moved me to the front/center. i was right next to the stage and liz was about 5 feet from me the whole time. i got a guitar pick and she even looked at me and smiled (then again i had the huge goggles (points at my icon, which is a pic of me, for those in the community) and most people always check them out, so i think liz was wondering what the hell i was wearing on my face. she touched my hand after the show and all that. i left the show and like literally a bunch of liz phans were out and we talked a lot and hung out. it was really neat. i always thought i was a hardcore phan, but everyone had me beat. i did had the seniority and the chicagoness on all of them, but that's about it. it was way way too cool!

1:05 pm - Liz Phair 4/2/04 Philly

If you read no further in what promises to be a long-ass entry, know these three things:

1) We went to the Liz Phair show last night.
2) The show was amazing.

That said.

We (Omer, Meena, and I) got into the city at 2:30ish. After some bathroom finding shennanigans, we headed over to the Electric Factory. When we got there, there was already one girl waiting in line. Which was sort of annoyingly impressive, since it was still early and it was pouring rain outside.

We waited in the car until another person showed up to get in line. Which was when we decided to brave the elements and get in line. Craftily enough, Meena had brought along a sleeping bag and trash bags which we used to sheild ourselves from the elements.

After a couple hours of weighting, about 10 of us were lined up for the show. And that was when this girl came out of the venue and said, "Hey I'm with (insert local radio rock station here) and we had some people who won spots at the soundcheck/meet and greet who didn't show up. Do you guys want to go in and watch the soundcheck and meet Liz Phair." So we were all HELL YES.

So after a while, the 10 or so of us got to go inside. Where we waited around for a couple minutes til they let us into the stage room for the sound check.

So we headed into the stage room, and there is Liz Phair on stage checking monitors and guitar sounds and all that. And Meena and Omer and I were all almost peeing our pants. So when Liz Phair sees the lot of us she says, "Oh, you guys are so cute, you came right up to the front." And she said "I love your spirits!"

Then she started playing some songs with the band and talking about volume levels and all that. And during the songs, me and Omer were rocking out, trying to contain ourselves. At one point, Liz Phair told us she was sorry that everything was so loud, but that's how they had to test the sound. And I think we made rock and roll signs or something, and she laughed.

The soundcheck was amazing. It would've been worth the ticket price just for that. It was like a mini-personal concert. She played "Fuck and Run." FUCK AND RUN! And me and Omer and Meena went crazy and were so happy.

After they finished the soundcheck, Liz Phair came down to the floor and did autographs. We sort of stood back while everyone else got theirs, and we waited til the end to get ours. Liz Phair was so cute and nice and happy. I LOVED HER! She signed stuff for all of us, and spelled all our names right and was so nice!

That whole part of the experience was way better than I could ever put into words.

After the sound check, the event staff had us all go back outside, but we were still allowed to be in the front of the line. Then there was a pretty long wait in the rain til doors opened, but I think we were so happy and in a state of euphoria that we didn't care.

Finally doors opened, and we went right quickly up to the front row. Eventually, the first act Rachel Yamagata came on. And I really liked her a lot. She had split ends and a really good voice, and she looked like a mix between Cat Power and Liv Tyler and Shannon Dougherty.

Next was the band Wheat. And oh man, they were SO BAD. TERIBBLE. It was as if they got together a group of the most boring people alive, and from those people they took the ones that could play instruments. That was Wheat.

Then. THEN. Liz Phair. The band came out, and they had this whole very rock-ish opening. And then Liz came out and we went crazy. I was afraid she was going to open with "Why Can't I" or some other ilk from the new album. But no! She opened with "FLOWER!" FLOWER! It was freaking amazing, I had so much respect for her. She was totally KEEPING IT REAL.

So she played, and her set was absolutely amazing. She played so much old material, and just enough new stuff to keep the "Why Can't I" crowd happy. She played so many songs I wanted to hear but didn't think she'd play. "Help Me Mary," fucking "Stratford-on Guy!" Freaking awesome!

The crowd was kind of lame, I guess it was mostly people there to hear "Why Can't I." Which she played and it was good, but funny.

For the encore, she did "Mesmerizing" and "Fuck and Run" and then "H.W.C." Which were both freaking awesome. It sort of blew my mind to see her play "Fuck and Run" twice in one night.

Through the whole show, Liz was smiling and you could see what a good time she was having. And, she made a lot of eye contact with the audience which was really cool. She smiled and made eyes at the three of us all night, and she laughed at us when we really went crazy dancing and having a good time. She was great.

At the end of the show, we waited around to try to get set lists. I got half of one, because this girl went up and tried to rip it away from the security gaurd who was giving it away. Then Omer got one from a security gaurd who gave it to him and said something about him singing every single word, which was awesome and true.

On the way out of the venue, this guy said to the three of us, "You guys were ON through the whole show." Which was true, we were rocking out so hard. I couldn't beleive that more people weren't going crazy or dancing during the show. Dude, it was fucking LIZ PHAIR!

So, long story short, it was an amazing night, and an amazing show, and meeting her was also amazing.

I can't wait to get my pictures back. Setlist:

Please Include Aaron Schmitt Into Your prayers !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Or if you don't beleive in praying... please just hope for him to get better!

My cousin Aaron, who I and our family love very much was assaulted and now is in the hospital with severe Brain damage. We are hoping and praying he will come out of the hospital alive and with very little disability. Statistics say he may live but will live the life nearly of a vegetable. He is a very sweet and kind tattoo artist/piercer, 25 year old, who has a daughter and a life full of plans. I know that things happen for a reason, and god's will is going to take place, but miracles do happen, and we are all praying that Aaron will come out of this okay. Please, please include Aaron Schmitt into your prayers as he is very well loved by freinds and family and he needs all the help and prayers that he can get!!!!!!!

I just joined this community today and I feel a ton better. Liz Phair is the sexiest gal to play music since Marilyn Monroe sang " Diamonds are a girls best friend". I have seen Liz live 3 times, twice last year in Atlanta, Georgia from which I hail.
